Some minor surgical procedures are performed within the clinic, but all major surgical procedures, requiring general anesthesia, are performed at Bougainvillea Clinic, where full operating facilities and overnight beds are available.
Surgical conditions commonly evaluated and treated include:
- Lumps and Bumps, e.g.: lipomas (fatty tumors which may occur anywhere on the body), sebaceous cysts, ganglions on the wrist, skin or subcutaneous nodules.
- Breast Lumps: breast cysts, benign breast masses, breast cancer. Needle biopsies of breast for abnormal mammograms.
- Thyroid masses/tumors (goiters or goitres): thyroid biopsy and thyroidectomy.
- Abdominal Pains: Some pains in the abdomen are due to a condition which requires emergency or urgent surgical treatment and it is important that these patients be examined by a surgeon.
Such conditions include:
- Acute appendicitis, acute pancreatitis, perforated peptic ulcers and other intestinal perforations.
- Acute intestinal obstruction form various causes, such as abdominal adhesions, twisted bowel (intestinal volvulus), intestinal tumors/ cancers, or obstructed/incarcerated hernia.
- Diverticulitis.
- Gallstone attacks (biliary colic/cholelithiasis) and Cholecystitis (inflamed gallbladder).
- Kidney Stones (renal or ureteric colic).
- Testicular torsion or infection (epidymo-orchitis).
Other Surgical conditions evaluated and treated include:
- Hernias- inguinal hernias, ventral hernias, incisional hernias, umbilical hernias.
- Cancer of the colon and rectum (colorectal cancer).
- Hemorrhoids (Piles), Anal Fissures and Anal Fistulas (fistulae).
- Bladder problems: General surgeons perform acute/ emergency interventions for Urinary obstruction from an enlarged prostate, bladder stones, or strictures of the urethra; and evaluate and treat Hematuria (bleeding from the urinary tract).
- Male genital problems: Circumcision, swellings of the scrotum/testicles (e.g., hydrocele), and testicular torsion (surgical emergency) Prostate Biopsies.
